Two products, one name

You've probably met GHK-Cu twice without noticing.

Once on the ingredients list of a serum, listed as copper peptide or copper tripeptide-1. And once in a forum, as a vial someone injects.

Those are different products, and the evidence for one says nothing about the other.

Our profile puts it directly: finished topical cosmetics and injectable GHK-Cu are different evidence questions. That single sentence resolves most of the confusion around this compound.

A cosmetic is a formulated product designed to sit on skin, at a concentration a formulator chose, inside a regulatory category that doesn't permit medical claims. An injectable vial of research material is a different substance, entering the body a different way, with no authorization for human use at all.

People routinely read a study about one and buy the other.

What it actually is

GHK-Cu is short. Really short.

It's a tripeptide, three amino acids, glycine plus histidine plus lysine, bound to a copper ion. The full chemical name is glycyl-L-histidyl-L-lysine copper.

For scale: BPC-157 is 15 amino acids and semaglutide is 31. Three is about as small as a peptide gets.

It occurs naturally in the body, and that's genuinely interesting rather than just good marketing. The copper binding is the part researchers care about, because copper is involved in the enzymes that build and remodel connective tissue.

That last phrase is where the claim ends.

What the evidence supports, and where it stops

The research here is fibroblast studies. Fibroblasts are the cells that produce collagen, and studying them in culture is how you find out whether a molecule affects collagen machinery.

Those studies support collagen-related biological activity. That's a real result, and it explains why the ingredient is taken seriously by formulators.

What it can't establish:

  • Clinical anti-aging outcomes
  • Hair growth
  • Wound healing
  • Any systemic benefit

The gap between "affects collagen synthesis in cultured cells" and "reduces your wrinkles" is enormous, and it's the gap the entire copper-peptide marketing category is built across.

That gap also has a regulatory dimension. Advertising a cosmetic with claims that amount to a health or treatment outcome is exactly the kind of unsupported claim regulators police.2

This is also the honest answer to why dermatologists tend to be lukewarm about copper peptides while not dismissing them. The lab signal is real. The outcome evidence isn't there, and cheaper ingredients have more of it.

The dose problem: GHK-Cu is our least reliable compound

Here's where our own data says something no vendor page will, and GHK-Cu stands out for the wrong reason.

Our testing ledger holds 12 published lab records for it, 11 carrying dose data, each traceable to the original lab document.3

Across our whole ledger, the pattern is that vials come in over their labelled dose. 98 of 112 records measured high.

GHK-Cu is the only compound where under-dosing is more common than over-dosing.

That's a spread of roughly 47 percentage points on vials all labelled the same. Four real examples, every one above 99.4% pure:

Same nominal product. One vial holds three-quarters of what it claims, another holds nearly a quarter extra, and purity looks excellent on all of them.

If you only read the purity column, every one of these passes. That's exactly the trap we describe in how to read a certificate of analysis: purity and quantity are separate questions, and a strong answer to one is not an answer to the other.

We're not going to guess why GHK-Cu specifically is this inconsistent. Certificates can't tell us whether it's filling, handling, the copper complex itself, or measurement method.

One more caution worth knowing: one of those −22.7% results appears in our ledger under six different vendor names, with identical purity and mass figures. Counting sellers who "have testing" overstates how much independent testing exists. We cover that in how to evaluate a peptide vendor.

Where GHK-Cu sits

Three things to carry away, in order of usefulness.

The serum and the vial are different questions. If you came here from a skincare ingredient list, most of what follows about injectables doesn't apply to your face cream, and vice versa.

The lab signal is real and the outcome evidence isn't. Fibroblast activity is a reason to keep studying it, not a reason to expect a result.

The dose is the least reliable of anything we track. Six of eleven vials under label, a 47-point spread, and purity numbers that look perfect throughout.

For a compound this widely sold and this cheap, that combination deserves more attention than it gets.
